Rhys Davies wins at Pontrilas
The Wales and West Enduro Club hosted the 2nd round of their 2017 series at Platch farm near Pontrilas on Sunday 14th May. There were 3 events in a five mile radius and the budding hedgerows were alive with the sound of migrating vans and motorhomes cursing the invention of GPS. Platch Farm slopes steeply so - with heavy overnight rain forecast - the parking was at the top of the hill which was a good stretch of the legs from the start but offered a fabulous panorama of the Black mountains and the Malvern hills, The course looped around the wooded valley and - in the damp morning air - it looked challenging.
The riders were flagged away promptly at 11.00am by the Clerk of the Course Glenn Thomas. Alex Barnes took the holeshot on a Sherco. From the start the riders who didn't lose the front wheels on the first rooty off camber descended into a stream crossing, The return crossing was more daunting with an easy and hard option which became a hard and very hard option. Rhys Davies (Beta) took the lead from Tim Foreman (Beta) and Derek Bawn with SuperVets Jeremy Box. Grant Churchward and Paul Biggs close behind. The bright sunshine and a drying breeze soon took the slickness off the going but a camber on the far side of the valley proven to be a stubborn obstacle and it was cut.
At 12.30 the leaders pitted and refueled. Derek Bawn moved up into second but Rhys Davies with the assistance of Matthew Jones on the filler kept his commanding lead and went on to take the win. Derek Bawn was runner up and Tim Foreman was 3rd. Brendan Griffiths was 4th and Dean Edwards was 5th. Jeremy Box in 6th was the best SuperVet. Grant Churchward 7th was runner up and Paul Biggs was 3rd. Nick Jones and Ryan Bevan - Best Clubman - rounded of the top 10.
