“Brothers in Arms”

WOR EVENTS 4 HOUR 2MAN / IRON MAN ENDURO @ MANOR PARK – POOL QUAY – WELSHPOOL
SEPTEMBER 2017

Report: Keith Williams

“The Humphreys brothers were an unstoppable unit of speed and skill last weekend at WOR Events 4 Hour Team and Ironman Enduro at the clubs Manor Park venue near Welshpool. Completing a combined score of 25 laps, 2 laps clear of everyone else, Gethin on the MRS Sherco 250f and Owain on the CF Racing Husqvarna 350 made the tricky, wet and slippery field sections look easy and in the unbelievably dry and dusty wooded sections the sheer power over the whoops in the old railway lines was a joy to watch. At the end of 4 hours the brothers stood tall as the 2man A team winners and simply dominated the event. A superb 5-mile lap was on offer from the WOR team and as always was prepped and managed to perfection with the mix of fast and slow in a perfect ratio. Settling in as worthy Runners up was the team of Alex West and George Price, uniting after a while of not doing much riding to show they still have the skill and speed to cut it at the forefront of the WOR events. They finished on 23 laps as did Wagstaff and Ditchfield in 3rd spot with a 4 and a half minute plus advantage to West and Price. A special mention must go out to 4th placed Paul Herbert and Rob Cooke, especially Herbert, whom after an early 2nd lap injury to Cooke, Herbie stayed solo and rode superb to match the 23 laps and be only 4 minutes adrift of the podium. Well done indeed.

Adam Bates and Paul Lightfoot topped the 2man B team group with a ride that led from start to finish of the 4hr battle. They completed 20 laps and took an 11-minute advantage over the pairing of Salt and King, also on 20 laps with the father and son team of Emery and Emery securing 3rd spot on 19 laps between them.

John Shirt and Martin Sandiford combined there old school skills in the Vets 2 man on the new Gas Gas 300 to take a 3 minute winning Margin over Runners up, WOR Legend, Lincoln Brewster and his fast team mate, Martin Atherton with both teams finishing on 22 laps as did the awesome performance of Freeman and Griffiths only 2 mins adrift of the runners up.

The Ironman folk showed super stamina and determination to tackle the entire 4hr challenge without a partner to share the load and help get more laps. Top Ironman Expert was Kevin Wallace showing sheer consistency to take the win in the group from runner up Andy Cooke with both riders on 20 laps each and a 10-minute advantage to Wallace. Earlier Matt Silvester had been out in front but two punctures ended his day at the 2hrs 50 mark with Craig Reynolds then taking the lead but pulling out and having a DNF at the 2hrs 55 minute.

Ironman Clubman victory went to TT Road racing star, Steve Mercer whom gave his all for the entire 4hrs to hold off a strong challenge from runner up Rob Francom. At the end their was 1 minute 40 seconds advantage to the likeable Mercer who made the long trip up from Kent worthwhile indeed. The top two completed 21 laps with 3rd placed Gwion Prys on 20 laps deserving his podium place.

The top Ironman Sportsman was Sam Morris with Martin Wells as Runner Up and Young Charlie Goddard in 3rd spot. All the top 4 Iron Sportsman doing 19 laps each.

The race started for the 4 hr racers at 10am and at 12 noon a new group of riders entered the battle in the separate but included, 2-hour open Hare Scramble. Top man in that was the fast KTM mounted youngster, Henry Yardley. Yardley was the only rider in that class to complete 12 laps as he pushed Expert Sherco mounted Gary Jenkins into the Runners up spot on 11 laps and 3rd placed Robert Hughes also on 11 laps bit 3 mins down on Jenkins.

A nice presentation of awards followed straight after in a very busy paddock that did not let the consistent rain and drizzle of the day hamper any of the riding or event enthusiasm. This was another top-drawer event from the WOR Events team and you could see the riders appreciated that as the smiling face left the to go home beeping horns and waving big thumbs up.

Steve Ireland and his WOR team would like as always to send out a massive thankyou to all involved from the Sponsors, Land owners, Staff, caterers, Medics and most of the Riders for supporting the events and making them happen in their droves.
