Wins Big at Sheffield Supercross
Red Bull KTM riders Mike Brown and Tommy Searle along with MDK/KTM Factory Junior Team rider Max Anstie each won their respective class at the opening round of the British Supercross Championship Series over the weekend. Defending SX-1 British Supercross Champion, Brown, decided to race both the SX-1 and SX-2 classes aboard his KTM 250 SX-F. Brown had a great run in the SX-2 class where he took the win followed by fellow Red Bull KTM Factory rider Tommy Searle. In the SX-1 main event Brown, had a slight disadvantage riding on the lower displacement bike but still fared well finishing 4th overall. Brown was not the only one pulling double-duty as Searle also competed in two classes over the weekend. Searle earned 2nd in the SX-2 class as described above, and also took an amazing victory in the British Open class over Carl Nunn. Searle passed Nunn in the last few remaining laps to take the lead and the win. This was Searle’s last race in England before leaving for the United States where he will compete for the 2009 season as a member of the MDK/KTM Factory Motocross Lites Team. Multi-time British 85cc Champion, Max Anstie, had a great ride at Sheffield in his first Youth Open British Supercross race aboard the KTM 250 SX-F. Anstie easily won his heat race to qualify into the main event where he took the lead by the second corner and never looked back. Anstie lapped up to second place before taking the win. “It felt really good to win here. I have not had much time on the bigger bikes, so to come here and win like this helps my build my confidence a lot,” remarked Anstie, who will remain in Europe for the coming weeks to prepare for the Bercy Supercross. Anstie will compete on his KTM 125 SX in that event in the 125cc Invitational race. SX-1 Overall Results 1. Colton Facciotti 2. Heath Voss 3. Jeff Alessi 4. Mike Brown - KTM 5. Another year for British Supercross series is once again done and dusted! The 2007/2008 Future West ACU British Supercross Championships wrapped up this past weekend at the amazing O2 Arena in London. An enthusiastic crowd cheered on the best of British Supercross for last event of the season. The talk of the weekend was the amazing new O2 Arena and hot Supercross action. In the Pro Lights class, CAS Honda’s Mike Brown broke out to an early lead riding the Honda CR250f for the first time in Supercross this year, preparing for the start of the outdoor season this weekend at Hawkstone Park. Canadian Dixon Yamaha team-mates Colton Facciotti and Jean Sebastien Roy would enter the event separated by only three points. Brown jumped out to the early lead and never looked back with JSR and Facciotti in tow. Facciotti only need to finish behind JSR to claim his second British Supercross Championship title of his career. JSR would give it his all, ending the Lights on Brown’s back tyre. South Africa’s Neville Bradshaw rounded out the top three in the championship chase. The Pro Open final was set for another CAS Honda Brown win. Brown who looked comfortable on the 250f, would again get another great start leading the pack and started to pull out a sizeable lead before 19-year-old Kyle Beaton of Canada jumped in behind Brown and started to up the pace. At the half way point back markers started to become issue. Beaton seized the opportunity and made the pass on veteran Brown. Once passed Brown Beaton did not let up and claimed a sizeable victory over Brown for Yamaha UK and Dixon Racing. Brown would claim yet another British Supercross Championship title. Jean Sebastien Roy would take 5th in the pro open main and second overall in the championship whilst team-mate Facciotti would take third on the night and in the overall standings. Along with the pro racing titles were also decided in the Clubman and Youth classes. In the Auto’s it was young Tommy Schofield taking the championship over Jamie Clark and Alfie Mountford. In the 65’s Tom Neal claimed the Championships only three points ahead of Scooter Webster and Alfie Bowtell. In the small wheel it was James Dunn who took his first British Supercross championship ahead of Daniel Clark and Bradley Ward. Ross Clarke captured the Big Wheel 85 title ten points ahead of Luke Norris and Ben Reed. Norway’s Per Kristian Bakke claimed his first British Supercross title ahead of TM’s Lewis King and Ryan Potenger. The Clubman lights saw Carl Jones way out front of Harry Bertram and Vincent Cossard of France. In the Clubman open it was South African Mark Atkinson who climbed from dead last off the start to Championship winning position on the night ahead Clubman Lights Champ Carl Jones and Supercross Veteran Danny Blakely. Crowds flocked into the brand new Liverpool Echo Arena on Friday and Saturday night, 25th and 26th January. Friday’s crowd as expected was half full with a near sell-out on their hands for Saturday’s racing action. Despite some media reports prior to the event, it was extremely popular and very successful and proved a big hit with all those involved. The fans were supportive and eager to bring the house down supporting all the riders. Friday night saw the very first British Supercross Championship Head to Head competition, which had the crowd on their feet. Several top British riders were in attendance including US rider and CAS Honda superstar Mike Brown, who rode to convincing wins on Friday and Saturday night in the Pro Open finals. Former British Champion and now ‘Suso’ Suzuki rider Carly Nunn made his Motovision debut and looked great. Canadian Colton Facciotti, who rode to the win in the Pro Lights on Saturday night as well as King of Canadian Motocross, Jean Sebastien Toy both made impact in their races taking podium places. Rising British Supercross star, PAR Homes Honda rider Ashley Greedy made himself known on Friday night by collecting the cash in the dramatic Head-to-Head. South African MXW Rider Neville Bradshaw also rode exceptional well after his return from injury, gaining three of the main podiums over the two nights. Not only did the pro's put on a show for the fans the youth and clubman classes also produced some top notch racing. All in all it was a fantastic first trip to Liverpool. The Supercross also gained spectators from a different sport, with 13 times TT Winner John McGuinness, Ten Kate World Supersport rider Jonathan Rea and HM Plant British Supersport rider Steve Brogan all coming to see how it was done. When the high flying sport of Supercross bursts into life as man and machine challenge an unforgiving dirt race track consisting of huge jumps and moguls known in the motocross world as whoops. Before the fun can start, over two thousand tons of earth will be hauled into the arena and rapidly sculptured into an amazing race track. An armada of lorries, bulldozers and earth moving equipment will be frantically at work the day before the event to create not only a race track but also a work of art. This event will be the first ever Supercross at the O2, and the first in London for many years! It is appropriate that the O2 is sitting on the international date line as a star-studded line-up of top Supercross and Motocross riders are set to fight it out amongst each other to be crowed the ACU Future West British Supercross Champion. Over that time thousands of tons of dirt have been removed from the site to be replaced with a world class steel and glass structure second to none. Fitting for what is turning out to be one of the hottest tourist destinations north of London. It seems a little hard to believe that one of the first events at the arena on the 25th and 26th of January will involve filling the Liverpool Echo Arena back up with dirt, but that is what will be required to stage the most exciting form of indoor motorsport on the planet - Supercross. As would be expected for a world class venue's debut some of the world’s best Supercross champions will be in attendance and competing including former US motocross champion Mike Brown who will be representing Honda and the US at this first time ever Liverpool event. Canada's very best riders will also be on hand including Yamaha mounted, six-time Canadian Motocross champ Jean Sebastian Roy (JSR), who will be joined by his young team-mate and fellow Canuck, Colton Facciotti. Facciotti is no stranger to British Supercross, claiming his first British Supercoss title back in 2005 at the unprecedented tender age of 16. Spanish Supercross star Xavier Hernandez will also compete at the event representing Spain and KTM. The UK will be represented well at Liverpool with former British Supercross and Motocross champ Carl Nunn making his Motovison Suzuki debut as well as another former British Supercross champ, Lewis Gregory of Relentless Suzuki. Many other riders from around the world including Canada, South Africa, France and Belgium will be looking to defend their national pride in what is steadily turning into an international race of champions not just rounds two and three of the British Supercross Championships. Round one of the series kicked off at Sheffield Arena on the 3rd of November with the final round set to take place at London's newest venue The O2 Arena on the 23rd of February where British Supercross Champions will be crowned. Originally planned for Wembley Arena on March 1st the event now moves to the O2 Arena on February 23, 2008. The move from the scheduled Wembley Arena comes after a clash with the annual Hawkstone International event after the organisers of the International were forced to change their date. "It has been a lot of work to move the date and venue but the O2 facility is second to none. I was amazed when I visited the O2 for the first time. The arena is first class with features we have never seen in an arena. The O2 Arena has more seats which is a good thing as the last event we held in London back in '99 at Earls Court was packed to the rafters with 10,000 plus spectators." says Future West's John Hellam. The O2 will have approximately the same amount of seats as Earls Court. Outside the arena you will still be under the huge dome which has been transformed into an entertainment area. Entertainment Avenue, inside the dome features numerous restaurants and bars plus a multi-plex cinema with 11 screens as well as an exhibition hall which is hosting the Tutankhamun Pharoah exhibition. Everything is inside out of the weather under the huge dome. The O2 has its own subway and bus station plus access to central London by boat with acres of parking and easily accessible from the M25. If that is not enough the whole complex sits right next door to the David Beckham Football Academy. Tickets for the final round of the Future West ACU British Supercross Championship will be available in the next few weeks, please stay tuned to www.fwsx.com for more details. Rounds 2 and 3 of the series are set for the brand new Liverpool Echo Arena on the 25th and 26th of January. Tickets for Liverpool are available through the Liverpool Echo Arena box office on 0844 8000 400. Stunning Supercross Series for the UK Future West Promotions and the ACU have teamed up to present a four round Supercross Series across the UK over the winter months. The three venues, four round series will kick off on Saturday 3rd November at the Hallam FM Arena in Sheffield. Round two and three will take place at the newly built Arena at ACC Liverpool, part of the stunning King’s Waterfront Complex which opens for business in January 2008. The FWSX event will be one of the first events to take place at the Arena on the 25th and 26th January. The final round of the SX series will take place at the freshly renovated Wembley Arena in London. Future West’s John Hellam had this to say. “This year will be the start of long term period of stability for Supercross in Britain. We have entered into an exclusive long term agreement with the ACU, we are now experiencing great cooperation between our two organisations.” “Last year’s Sheffield event was ACU sanctioned where we worked closely with both Roy Humphrey and Dave Williams. The event ran extremely smooth and developed a good working relationship for the future. This year we feel that we have three of the best venues in the country with ample space between each date to avoid over-saturation." Hellam added. The series is officially backed by the ACU and will be inscribed on the FIM International calendar and will crown ACU British Supercross Champions in all classes. With long-term stability in place for the British Supercross Championships Future West are very enthusiastic. “Expect to see the best available Supercross riders from all over the world racing alongside the UK’s very best up and coming riders. Our long term commitment to our youth and amateur riders will continue as they are key to a successful future.” Comments Hellam. Last year saw record entries for Sheffield with over 300 riders.
