GP Polisport du Portugal – Vale de Cambra 15th/16th April

A Grand Prix with character!

Few days only after a great Grand Prix AMV Seguros of Cataluña, the Maxxis FIM Enduro World Championship continues its usual tour in the Iberian Peninsula taking the way to Portugal, particularly in Vale de Cambra, town situated in the South of the second biggest city of the country: Porto.

The FIM gave to the Federaçao Nacional de Motociclismo Portugal (FMP) the honors to organize this event. And it is the valorous Sport Clube de Cambra that will have the task to make of this Grand Prix Polisport of Portugal a great success. This Moto Club, chaired by Antonio CARMO, will not organize its first EWC event. Indeed, it has already hosted two times the EWC caravan in 2008 and 2011, year in which it had a big challenge: to organize a round in less than a month after the defection of the originally planned Moto Club… It’s a very dynamic club which has the means of its ambitions.

A city and a region ideal for Enduro!

The Sport Clube de Cambra has drawn a lap of 54 kilometres that the riders will complete four times during each of the two days of racing, with, like in Solsona, two time checks per lap. The paddock will be situated in the brand new City Park of Vale de Cambra. The Cross Test and the Enduro Test will be located in Vila Cova de Perrinho, just seven kilometers from the paddock and next to Polisport factory. On its side, the Xtreme Test will take place in Algeriz, only three kilometers from the nerve center of the race. After the last week heavy rains, the terrain will be very rocky and could depend from the weather of the weekend... To note that there will be no KTM Super Test in Vale de Cambra.

Nice city from North Portugal, Vale de Cambra has 25 000 inhabitants and is divided into nine sections (Aroes, Cepelos, Codal, Junqueira, Macieira de Cambra, Roge, Sao Pedro de Casteloes, Vila Cha, Vila Cova de Perrinho). This location of Aveiro district is situated 65 kilometers South from Porto and 295 North from Lisbon. The craft industry is an important asset of the local economy and also the gastronomy and the vine growing are also appreciated. Faithful and major sponsor of the Maxxis FIM Enduro World Championship, the Polisport brand, chaired by Pedro ARAUJO, is located few kilometers from Vale de Cambra: more precisely in Carregosa.

The Big Three in Enduro 2…

In Enduro 2, the race to the victory looks much more open than in the previous years. Pierre-Alexandre RENET (F - HVA) and Antoine MEO (F - KTM), winners in Catalonia, will want to repeat their performance while Johnny AUBERT (F - Beta) will also aim to victory. On his part, Alex SALVINI (I - Honda), still recovering, will seek once again to provide valuable points until his thumb injury subsides.

Behind these four men, outsiders Lorenzo SANTOLINO (E - Sherco), Oriol MENA (E - Beta), Jonathan BARRAGAN (E - HVA) or also Mirko GRITTI (I - KTM), Manuel MONNI (I - HVA) and Victor GUERRERO (ESP - KTM) will take advantage of the misfortunes of the 2013 World Champion in order to look to finish in the Top 4... While for the numerous Portuguese audience expected, they will have to give voice to bring his best national pilot, namely Gonçalo REIS (P - KTM), in the Top 10!

Already crowned with a double victory in E3 on his land last week, Ivan CERVANTES (ESP - KTM) arrives in Vale de Cambra with a moral back to block. And we know, "El Torito" even more dangerous when he is in full confidence. But a group of six riders dream of bringing him down from his pedestal and to be back on his heels from the Grand Prix Polisport of Portugal. Indeed, Matthew Phillips (AUS - KTM), Luis CORREIA (P - Beta), Lorenzo SANTOLINO (SF - Sherco), Mathias BELLINO (FRA - HVA) and also Aigar LEOK (EST - TM) and Jeremy JOLY (F - KTM) proved in Solsona they had the speed to come tickle the leader of the class even if they have to be more consistent... Moreover, Fabien PLANET (F - Sherco) could also come and join the battle to the podium and Joakim LJUNGGREN (S - HVA) should look for revenge after a disappointing Grand Prix of Cataluña...

GUERRERO has to react!

After winning debut in Solsona riding his KTM 250 EXC-F, Christophe NAMBOTIN (F - KTM) will aim to confirm his two great results while making more his mark on the Enduro 1. But we expect that his teammate Cristobal GUERRERO (ESP - KTM) will do anything to counter the good start of the double E3 World Champion, supported by Sherco Boys Anthony BOISSIERE (F) and Jeremy TARROUX (F), very incisive in the province of Lleida, and by Eero REMES (SF - TM) always well placed. For his part, the Spaniard Jaume BETRIU (HVA) is expected to confirm after his great first day while Thomas OLDRATI (I - HVA), Nicolas DEPARROIS (F - Honda) and Maurizio MICHELUZ (I - Suzuki) should step up if they want to maintain their outsiders standing. We’ll also have to keep an eye on Joaquim RODRIGUES (P - KTM) who will be highly motivated in front of his fans.

Author of an impeccable double this weekend, Danny MCCANNEY (GB - Beta) impressed in the Junior class! But this booming category seems very open with eight riders able to grab the win as Giacomo REDONDI (I - Beta), Loïc LARRIEU (FRA - HVA), Nicolo MORI (I - KTM), Jamie MCCANNEY (GB - HVA), Alessandro BATTIG (I - Honda) and the Portuguese Diogo VENTURA (Gas Gas) and Luis OLIVEIRA (Honda)... in FIM Youth Cup 125cc, Davide SORECA (I - Yam) has emerged as a serious contender for the title but he will still have to pay attention to Albin ELOWSON (S - HVA), Jeremy MIROIR (F - Yam), Michele MARCHELLI (I - KTM) or Jesper BORJESSON (S - HVA). For his part, the Chilean Benjamin HERRERA (TM) will have to be back at the top very soon or he will see his title dreams flying away from him.

This Grand Prix Polisport of Portugal is highly anticipated and local aficionados prepare to vibrate in the nice city of Vale de Cambra that will become the sanctuary, for a few days, of the World Enduro!
