Colton Haaker Takes the Crown at the 2015 KLiM King of
the Motos The King of the Motos is one of the toughest races in the World. The format consists of 2 loops laid out by organiser Jimmy Lewis. The 27 mile morning desert race whittled the 79 starters down to 56 riders capable of starting the 3 hour afternoon Extreme test where it would take over an hour to complete the 12 mile lap. 6 times Erzberg finisher Cory Graffunder frm Canada on a KTM 300 2T was first across the line at the end of the first lap in 1 hour and 11 minutes closely followed by Colton Haaker (Husqvarna) and Beta rider Max Gerston was 3rd. Colton had led Cory but he had taken a wrong turn and lost the lead. The KOH course is not pre-ridden or marked and the riders must rely on GPS.After a brief pit stop the leaders were off again. At the start of the 2nd lap Haaker re-took the lead. Noah Kepple was a good way back in 4th. While the top three competitors battled each other, everyone else was battling the terrain. Colton Haaker had 3 minute lead over Cory Graffunder at the end of the 2nd lap and he went on to win. Graffunder was the runner up and Max Gerston was 3rd. Haaker - who had got lost on the last lap - laughed as he cross the finish line, “I still got lost and I knew where I was going.” The course is littered with obstacles like "The Waterfall" - one of the steepest sections. After the event Colton said “There is no way I could have won this race without help from my fellow competitors.” said Haaker at the awards ceremony. “You pretty much couldn’t make a lap without some help.” 18 year olds Rachel Gutish and Morgan Tanke were the only two women who made it to the afternoon session. 44 riders completed 1 lap. 11 completed a 2nd lap and only five completed a final third lap.
