Jack Edmondson wins Trevor Evans Memorial Enduro
Abbeycwmhir
29/30th August

There was a full house for the Rhayader club's inaugural running of the Trevor Evans Enduro (sponsored by Rhayader 4x4 Ltd) held in Abbeycwmhir on Saturday, however heavy rain greeted competitors when they arrived at the venue and although by the time the first riders had started blue skies had appeared the track was sticky and competitors knew they faced a hard day amongst the trees.

In the Championship class Jack Edmondson showed his undoubted talent and the skill he has honed in the World Enduro Championship to post the fastest test times on each lap, the only rider to post under three minutes on all four tests to finish ahead of local riders Ashley Wood and Shaun Bunchan. Lee Sealey challenged the leaders early on but he was dogged by an electrical problem. In an admirable gesture of sportsmanship Jack Edmondson gave him his spare plug but the problem was terminal. No pun intended.

After the opening test it was Trevor's son Jonathan who led the Experts class - a second ahead off Adam James and Daniel Mundell - but as the laps went by Mundell took control to overhaul the pair leaving James runner up and Evans third.

In the clubman class Sam Bailey along with Martin Williams were the only two to remain clean on the going and some good test times were enough to give Bailey the win over Ben Coleman and Katie Walker who has just returned to the sport after a few months off.

The Over 40 class was as competitive as ever with William Jones just two seconds ahead of David Price while Anthony Griffith was only a further 6 seconds adrift while Tim Cotton won the Over 50s class three seconds ahead of Shaun Skinner and Phil George who were separated by three hundredths of a second.

Tom Knill took the classic class win dropping one minute on the route while runner up Julian Crimp dropped 24 minutes,

The out stage was the most demanding stage of the course and the Sportsmen found the going tough with Bradley Sullivan taking the win. Only 16 out of 45 starters were classified as finishers.

The sidecar also took a beating. In the Championship class the leading British Championship contenders were again fighting hard for the win with Alun Davies and James Fergusson taking the advantage on the special tests but one minute dropped on the route meant him slipping to third with David Williams/Simon Brown taking the win over Jonathan Williams and Wayne James while down in fith place was Trevor's old passenger Graham McPhee crewing for Aled Evans. The Davies brothers were the only survivors in the experts class while Trevor's son Nicolas took top spot in the clubman sidecar class partnered by Alun Evans.
