Graham Jarvis gambles and wins Red Bull Sea to Sky 2015

Edition 6 October 4, 2015 - Kemer (Turkey)

BelRayHusqvarna Factory Rider Graham Jarvis (UK) clinches his first victory in 2015 by winning the main event of the most enjoyable Extreme Enduro - the Mountain Race at Red Bull Sea to Sky at the Turkish Riviera. Finishing second Jonny Walker’s (UK, KTM) whose hope to secure the Grand Slam in Extreme Enduro by winning all of the 6 major events within one year has been destroyed. KTM’s Wade Young from South Africa secures the podium coming in third.

From 0 to 2,365m in a bit more than 3 hours

After a spectacular motocross-like Beach Race on Friday and an Enduro style Forest Race on Saturday it was the main event - the Mountain Race - that gathered thousands of spectators.

They started at 09:00AM right from the beach in Kemer and the 67km track took them through the canyon, into the forest and all the way up to the very top of the mountain Olympos at an altitude of 2.365 m.

The riders had 7 hours maximum riding time to make it to the Red Bull arch at the finish line on the summit of the mountain.

The results of yesterdays Forest Race determined starting rows of ten riders in each row for the Mountain Race. All top riders were present in the first start row: Jonny Walker (UK, KTM), Graham Jarvis (UK, Husqvarna), Andreas "Letti" Lettenbichler and his son Manuel Lettenbichler (GER, KTM), Husqvarna), Paul Bolton (UK, KTM), Philipp Scholz (GER, KTM) and Wade Young (RSA, KTM) just to name a few.

Red Bull Sea to Sky continues to attract not only the top riders but also more and more ambitioned amateurs who want to race an extraordinary race at the highest international standards - situated in a beautiful landscape at the Turkish Riviera. A total of almost 300 riders from 30 countries were up for the challenge and started their mission.

It was South Africa’s Wade Young who got the holeshot at the start, closely followed by Jonny Walker on his KTM who had won all of the 5 major Extreme Enduro races in 2015 and was on a mission to become the first rider ever to get the Grand Slam nailed by also winning Red Bull Sea to Sky. Graham Jarvis - who dominated in previous years couldn’t score a major win this year - had come to Kemer with the clear intention to take the top spot on the podium, thus defending his 1st place at Red Bull Sea to Sky in 2014.

It’s been Graham’s – successful – approach in the past editions of Red Bull Sea to Sky to take it easy in the first and rather fast sections of the track. Today he played it safe until the last, technical and tiring sections of the race to attack Jonny Walker who had the lead for quite some time. When getting to the second tank stop the 40 year old man from Ripon in the UK decided to gamble and pass Jonny without fueling up, knowing that he would find it difficult to pass the 24 year old Walker in the single trails later on. His „all-in“ move worked out in the end, Jarvis was able to pull a gap on Walker and pushed to the max. Despite going flat out Walker wasn’t able to close the gap and came in 2 minutes and 45 seconds behind Jarvis.

Jarvis clearly dominates the history of Red Bull Sea to Sky by scoring 4 out of 6 wins. He was the one who delivered the tagline in 2012 by making this statement: “Red Bull Sea to Sky is not the hardest race but it’s definitely the most enjoyable!”

Looking back at the 5th Edition in 2014 Wade Young was seeking redemption for Andreas Lettenbichler stealing his podium position on the last uphill right before the finish. The 19 year old South African - who won the Roof of Africa twice – actually had to battle with the seasoned German KTM Factory rider but eventually pulled away and secured the 3rd place.

Paul Bolton from the UK was more than pleased coming in 4th: “It was a really good track this year with some new and really tough sections. I was able to pass Letti in one of the last switch-backs and kept pushing to maintain the position. I’m really happy with this result!”

Letti’s Mountain Race had mixed emotions. In the lead in the early part of the race he had to give in and let Jonny Walker pass. After Red Bull Romaniacs he had surgeries and virtually no training before Red Bull Sea to Sky: “I’ve had a big crash in the forest section and after that the shoulders did hurt. I got tired quite early in the race but after two months of not being able to train I’m happy with the 5th position.”

His 17 year old son Manuel Lettenbichler had actually beaten his father in the Forest Race the day before and wanted to improve his result from 2014 when he finished 12th. Manuel started in the first row and had a good first half of the race but was stuck with only the first gear for the last sections of the race. Still he finished 9th and set a clear signal that he has what it takes to fight for the podium sooner rather than later.

Burak Özdemir (31st), Islam Yildiz (38th) and Ismail Özgül (52nd) were the fastest riders from Turkey.

67 riders reached the top of the Tahtali and earned the Gold Medal finishing the Red Bull Sea to Sky 2015 Mountain Race. 80 riders made it to the Silver Finish at an altitude of 1,175m and were rewarded with a Silver Medal. 110 brave Hard Enduro heroes battled their way through the riverbed and got their Bonze Medal.

Red Bull Sea to Sky Edition 6 was a great success and the largest international motorsports event in Turkey. With almost 300 riders from 30 countries coming to the Turkish Riviera the amount of riders doubled in just two years. XVENTURE and the Kemer Enduro Club have once again done a great job in designing tracks which are tough and challenging but still ridable so that the individual skills and the physical condition will decide.

Quotes from the Podium

Graham Jarvis: „I got a terrible start, the bike just didn’t fire first time. I relaxed a little for the first half hour or so to save a bit of energy, prevent arm pump and played it safe overall. I was able to pass a few riders who made some mistakes and then I got into a good rhythm and played it hard towards the end. I gambled on the fuel because I saw Jonny at the second tank stop and decided to skip it because I knew it would have been difficult to pass him in the single trails after the tank stop. I managed to get a little bit of a gap then and so here I am. I’m very happy now, at least one win at the end of the season here at Red Bull Sea to Sky!“

Jonny Walker: „I made a good start, rode with Wade for a while but pushed hard, got into the rhythm but Wade caught me. Still I managed to pull away from him. But on the high-speed section my front wheel hit a rock or something and jolted my handlebars. My shoulder hurt like hell after that. I tried to shake it off but the pain never left. Graham caught me not bothering to fuel up, he managed to pull a gap and I just couldn’t stick with him. I really tried to catch him but it didn’t work out in the end. 5 out of 6 wins, it was a good year and I can’t complain even though I certainly wanted to win Red Bull Sea to Sky. Now I’ll concentrate on the training for the SuperEnduros coming up.“

Wade Young: „I got the holeshot so the first part was good. But later in the race I made too many stupid mistakes, Graham passed me and I stayed in third position pretty much for the rest of the race. Letti was closing in quite a bit so I really had to put my head down and push to the end. The track was great, I liked it a lot. Certainly a bit more challenging and tiring towards the end, my tire is worn out but I’m really happy having made the podium position - especially after last years devastating experience losing the podium on the last meters!“

Wade Young (RSA, KTM) scores an impressive win at the Forest Race - Jarvis loses 2nd place by just two seconds to Jonny Walker
October 3, 2015 - Kemer (Turkey)

Race Day 2 at Red Bull Sea to Sky 2015 was a big day for Wade Young. The 19 year old KTM rider Wade Young from South Africa surprised those who had expected the likes of Jonny Walker (UK, KTM) or Graham Jarvis (UK, Husqvarna) to win the Forest Race at the most enjoyable Extreme Enduro event. The time difference between the podium finishers was just 5 seconds! Walker came in three seconds behind Young and GrahamJarvis two seconds behind Walker.

Walker with the fastest lap in the qualification heats

The Forest Race track had been designed by Klaus Sřrensen of the XVENTURE team together with the Kemer Enduro Club and they did a lot of good work on it. About 80% of the track was new. Besides single trails in the forest there was quite a bit of riding in riverbeds, all ridable for everyone - the Pro riders had a big smile on their face after the finish line.

Having won the Beach Race on day one of the most enjoyable Extreme Enduro on the face of this planet, the 24 years old Walker was the first to start the Forest Race just a little outside of Kemer. Graham Jarvis really pushed hard right from the start to close the 30 seconds gap having to start 2nd behind Walker. Following the live time keeping - which is provided on the Red Bull Sea to Sky website - the two exceptional riders from the UK were very close. It took the top 10 just around 1 hour and 30 minutes to finish but in the end it came down to seconds that made the difference.

When Graham came in everybody knew it would be a very close result. Graham had been pushing very hard to close the gap for the entire duration of the Forest Race and you could tell by his rather aggressive riding style on this day that Graham was willing to give whatever it takes to win. During some sections of the race, Graham was in the lead but Jonny was able to fight back in the last parts. It didn’t work out for Graham in the end – he was just two seconds slower than Jonny on a 46km track!

But when everybody was speculating about a win of either Walker or Jarvis, the two times winner of the legendary Roof of Africa, Wade Young (KTM) rushed into the finish. He must have been on fire since he had started the Forest Race as the 8th rider, thus 4 minutes behind Jonny Walker.

Quotes from the Riders

Having had some bad luck in the past here and there, Wade Young was really happy: „I got into a good rhythm about quarter of the way in and caught the guys up ahead and built my confidence. I made a few mistakes but Im pretty happy with the day as you can tell. Tomorrow means a lot because I was pretty devastated last year getting stuck right at the end and missing the podium. I just want to be smooth and fast at the beginning and push all the way through and not make the same mistake as last year.“

The 17 year old Manuel Lettenbichler (GER, KTM) - the son of Andreas „Letti“ Lettenbichler – showed a superb performance in the Forest Race. He started in position 10 and finished 4th, he passed top riders such as Paul Bolton and Ben Hemingway. On the final invoice he beat his father Andreas „Letti“ Lettenbichler by more than one minute - the first time ever that „Mani“ was faster than his Dad! Here’s what he had to say: „The track was ace, simply a great ride, very fluent and I enjoyed it big time. I was happy that it wasn’t that hard to ride because I damaged my foot the day before the Beach Race. I really liked this track a lot and it’s great to start from the first row again tomorrow.“

Andreas “Letti” Lettenbichler: „Nice single trails, into the riverbed and out again and again - a big compliment to the crew who designed the track! I had a good flow throughout the entire race today even though I chose the wrong mousse for the race. It was too hard and I should have used a softer one. But I still made it into the first starting row for the main event tomorrow. Seeing Manuel on the 4th place makes me really happy. I expected him to beat me one day - that day has come now and it’s a great feeling.“

Burak Özdemir (TUR): „It is the 6th edition and I think it is the hardest, I am a local rider and it is really hard but enjoyable. The Beach Race was different because it was like extreme Enduro Cross in the sand! I saved my energy for today by not going into the finals yesterday even though I qualified. We are lucky it is not wet or raining because the tracks were so good today but if they were wet, it would have been hell! My hope for tomorrow is finish in the top 20.“

Jonny Walker takes the win at the Red Bull Sea to Sky 2015 Beach Race!

KTM Factory rider Jonny Walker (UK) takes a superior win at the first of three races days at Red Bull Sea to Sky Edition 6 in Kemer. Second place goes to last years overall winner Graham Jarvis (Husqvarna, UK) and third to Andreas „Letti“ Lettenbichler (GER, KTM).

Walker with the fastest lap in the qualification heats

In the morning of Race Day 1 of Red Bull Sea to Sky 296 riders from 30 countries were sent into two qualification heats to determine the starting order for the three finals in the afternoon. The riders were allowed to stick with their time of the first qualification heat if they were happy with that time. Jonny Walker scored the fastest time on his KTM 300 EXC followed by his teammate Andreas Lettenbichler from Germany and Wade Young from South Africa (KTM)!

6 British riders qualify in top ten 1 Jonny Walker 2 Andreas Lettenbichler 3 Wade Young 4 Graham Jarvis 5 Manuel Lettenbichler 6 Jonathan Richardson 7 Travis Teasdale 8 Andy Noakley 9 Paul Bolton 10 Ben Hemingway Other Brits 22nd Aled Price, 34th Mark Jackson, 37th Mick Boam, 43rd Sam Ludgate, 49th Mike Slater, 53rd James Nichols, 64th Craig Parkes, 65th Steve Huzzey, 68th Lee Depledge, 73rd Julian Rylance, 77th Mark Kirby. 78th Adam Keil, 79th Joseph Till, 86th Edward Benson, 87th Daniel Kelly, 93rd Tim Hunt, 96th Ben Roper.

After a midday break the fastest 150 riders were split up into three groups of 50 riders each for the three finals - primarily to avoid major traffic jams at the manmade obstacles: Final C with the slowest 50 riders ranked 101-150, final B with the medium paced 50 riders ranked 51-100 and the final A with the fastest 50 riders ranked 1-50.

All of the top riders such as Alfredo Gomez (ESP, Husqvarna), Graham Jarvis (UK, Husqvarna), Andreas Lettenbichler (GER, KTM) and Ben Hemingway (UK, Beta) most certainly were present in the Final A.

The Beach Race Track and the Finals

The finals started at 16:00 in the afternoon and about 5,000 spectators came to watch an extraordinary race on a superb track designed by Andy Fazekas of XVENTURE and built by the great team of the Kemer Enduro Club. Andy is also responsible for the legendary prologue at the Red Bull Romaniacs. He designed quite a different track for the Beach Race in 2015: One of his goals was to make it a bit more challenging for the riders with a motocross background. After all Red Bull Sea to Sky is a Hard Enduro event and aims to design the tracks tough but "ridable" for those who come prepared and with the skills required in Hard Enduro after all! The obstacles included giant tires, rocks, matrix, dumpsters and gap jumps.

It was the seasoned rider Andreas Lettenbichler from Germany on his KTM who took the holeshot when the Final A of fastest riders started in the late afternoon. Jonny Walker was in fourth position after the first turn and then pushed hard to get in front. It was obvious that Jonny really loves riding in the sand, he pushed hard but still rode smart and was able to take the lead after two laps. Other than last year the 24 years old Hard Enduro super star made no mistakes and took away the first win - this young man is clearly on a mission to clinch the first Grand Slam in Hard Enduro ever by winning all of the 6 major races in 2015.

Graham Jarvis delivered a smooth and controlled but still a fast race. He made up some time in the obstacles with his superb riding technique and made sure to stay way from the carnage in some places caused by riders getting stuck. Andreas Lettenbichler maintained a good pace despite still suffering from recent surgeries and a crash in the stone section. After about 2 months without training he didn’t expect a good result and was really happy ending up with the third place! His 17 years old son Manuel Lettenbichler (KTM) finished 10th and put himself in a good position for the Forest Race tomorrow.

Burak Özdemir and Islam Yildiz were the fastest Turkish Riders coming in on solid places 50 and 60.

Quotes from the Podium

Jonny Walker: “I think that was probably the hardest Beach Race I’ve ever done at Sea to Sky. It was really tough in places. I got a decent start and battled with Andreas for about two laps. Once I got into the lead I tried to build a gap but there were a few bottlenecks on the track and it was pure luck if you got through them clean or not. It’s great to get a win in the bag already. I always love the Beach Race and I’m chuffed to start off this race on a high. Hopefully I can keep things rolling for the rest of the weekend.”

Graham Jarvis: „I’m happy with the 2nd place. It was probably the hardest Beach Race I've ever did here in Kemer apart from that I felt like I rode ok. I had to wait here and there but just had to be patient & pick a line. I made one big mistake and got hooked up on a board. Apart from that I rode ok but got really tired towards the end - I think everybody was.”

Andreas “Letti” Lettenbichler: „The race went quite well, I took the holeshot which was important so you stay out of troubles in the first laps and also out of the dust. A lot of riders got stuck in the tyres and the rocks. I also took a big crash in the rocks, flipped over the front of the bike. It was very tiring, really, really physical and I’m super happy to get the first podium here at Red Bull Sea to Sky!“

Race Day 2 - Forest Race tomorrow

The results of the Beach Race determine the starting order of the Forest Race on day 2, Saturday October 3rd, 2015. The Forest Race will be about 75km long and 80% of the track will be new compared with 2014.

For the Forest Race - as well as the Mountain Race - there will be a live time keeping on our website.

The Red Bull Sea to Sky App for both, Android and iOS devices are offered. It contains maps of the three races, start list and results and it's a great source of information for both, riders and fans. Red Bull Sea to Sky – Edition 6 – to be bigger and better than ever!

October 2/5th - Kemer

Red Bull Turkey, the Kemer Enduro Club and XVENTURE are excited to ignite the 6th edition of the "most enjoyable Hard Enduro Race“: Red Bull Sea to Sky will take place on October 2 - 4, 2015, in Kemer, Turkey. International top riders such as Jonny Walker (KTM, UK), Graham Jarvis (Husqvarna, UK) and Andreas “Letti” Lettenbichler (GER, KTM) will once again battle for a total of €20,000 in prize money at the beautiful Turkish Riviera. If Jonny Walker wins Red Bull Sea to Sky the 24 years old Hard Enduro super star will be the first rider to ever clinch the Hard Enduro Grand Slam by winning all the 6 major events in one year!

The success story of Red Bull Sea to Sky continues!

With more almost 300 riders from more than 30 countries expected the unique Hard Enduro event in Turkey attracts more and more riders every year. It’s the unique combination of racing Extreme Enduro at the highest international standards, three days of racing action with three different racing styles and a track that takes the riders and their bikes literally from Sea to Sky which makes the top pros as well as the ambitioned amateurs travel to Turkey.

Red Bull Sea to Sky 2014 winner Graham Jarvis (UK, Husqvarna), Jonny Walker (UK, KTM), Andreas "Letti" Lettenbichler (GER, KTM), Alfredo Gomez (ESP, Husqvarna), Paul Bolton (UK, KTM), Wade Young (RSA, KTM), Philipp Scholz (GER, KTM) and Ben Hemingway (UK, Beta) to mention a few. At the end of today, Thursday Oct. 1, 2015 we will announce the final number of riders who have come to Kemer for what’s established itself as "the most enjoyable Hard Enduro Race“.

Hard Enduro Grand Slam for Jonny Walker?

2015 has been the year of one man: Jonny Walker won each and every of the major Hard Enduro races on his KTM in 2015 so far. Tough One (UK), Hell’s Gate (Italy), the Red Bull Hare Scramble at the Erzbergrodeo (Austria), Red Bull Romaniacs (Romania) and Red Bull 111 MegaWatt (Poland) and now he is determined to add the final win at Red Bull Sea to Sky!

Graham Jarvis, who dominated the Hard Enduro scene in the past year, was never able to seal the Grand Slam in the past and you can tell by watching his riding here in Turkey prior the race that he has come with the clear intention to take the win and destroy Jonny’s dream to get the Grand Slam.

But there are the likes of Husqvarna’s Alfredo Gomez and KTM’s Andreas "Letti" Lettenbichler who will also battle for podium - despite the fact that both came to Turkey suffering from injuries and surgeries in the past couple of weeks. Wade Young (KTM) from South Africa has a special motivation to go flat out on the Mountain Race - the main event of Red Bull Sea to Sky. Last year it looked like a safe 3rd place for him when Letti stole the podium from him just 300m before the finish line by choosing a different line.

Jonny Walker: “I’m excited that this could be my 6th win in 2015. It was a superb year for me and I will go flat out here in Turkey to win it. My preparations went well and I want to make it happen.”

Graham Jarvis: “2015 certainly was not my best year. But I think that the Mountain Race really suits me better than some of the other races. It will be longer this year so I’ll try to get things sorted in the technical sections.”

Andreas "Letti" Lettenbichler: “ The last two months since Red Bull Romaniacs with surgeries made it difficult for me to prepare properly for this race. I love to race here in Turkey, the track is always very well designed. I will give it all and let’s see where I end up. I’m living in the German Alps so the altitude here at Red Bull Sea to Sky has never been a problem for me.”

Manuel Lettenbichler: “With 2015 being my second Red Bull Sea to Sky appearance my goal is to get a better result than my 12th position last year. I trained a lot, feel strong and my result at the Red Bull Megawatt gives me the confidence that I can compete with the top level riders.

Alfredo Gomez: “I hurt my knee lately and haven’t been on the bike for a week now. Let’s see if it’s ok by now during the racing action. The altitude and duration is not an issue for me since I’m used to the altitude.”

6th edition with largely new tracks!

Three days of pure Hard Enduro racing action - the concept works very well: 3 races – 3 styles – 3 days

XVENTURE mastermind Martin Freinademetz, his Track Director Klaus Sřrensen and the Kemer Enduro Club team started working on the new 2015 tracks right after the 2014 edition was history. Especially the main event - Olympos Mountain Race on October 4, 2015 – will set new standards in Extreme Enduro and seriously challenge the riders who come with the ambition to reach the finish line on the top of the Tahtali at 2,365m.

Beach Race

Race day #1 of Red Bull Sea to Sky will start with the Beach Race on Friday, October 2, 2015. The spectators will get to see an even more exciting battle that requires speed, skills and courage right at the beach of Kemer. Andy Fazekas, who is responsible for the legendary Prologue at the Red Bull Romaniacs, has been flown in from Romania to build a track that has all the bells and whistles it takes to challenge the riders and entertain the fans. A mass start will take the riders into a fenced round circuit similar to a motocross track with sandy soil, a top speed straight section going along the waterfront and some natural as well as manmade obstacles. The mode is „15 minutes plus one lap" and the results of the Beach Race will determine the starting order for the Forest Race.

Forest Race

On race day #2 (Oct. 3rd) the riders will be taken on a time trial in the woods behind Kemer to ride some really cool single trails and gravel roads reaching into the foothills of the Taurus Mountains. If you’ve raced the 2014 Forest Race be prepared that you will be exposed to an 80% new and exciting track. The Forest Race track will be about 75km long. Again, the results of the Forest Race will determine the starting order for the Olympos Mountain Race.

Olympos Mountain Race

Race day #3 and the main event of Red Bull Sea to Sky will start right at the beach and it will take the riders all the way from "Sea to Sky" on Oct. 4th, 2015.

The riders will have to love stones. They will face stones right after the start and they will stick with the track until the very finish. After the start the riders will follow a riverbed but – unlike last year – will be taken out of the riverbed for a good 25km of trail ride in the lower Olympos mountain area before they will dive back into the river for the more tricky stone and water sections.

The Olympos Mountain Race will be longer and significantly harder than last years edition - especially with the new and gnarly sections added for the riders who are going for the Gold Medal - which will be dedicated only to the riders who made it to the Red Bull finish arch on the peak of the Olympos Mountain at an altitude of 2,365m after 80km. The organizers expect about 30-40 riders to finish the race within the 7 hours limit.

The Silver Medal will be handed to riders who are making the 55km between the start, master the last parts of the riverbed and the forest sections up to the tree line at about 1,185m of altitude within the 7 hours of race time.

Those who make it through the riverbed, the 25km of trail ride and to an altitude of 175m will earn a Bronze Medal. So there will be a great reward for the majority of the starters who come prepared and with the skills required.

Red Bull Sea to Sky 2015 - Prize Money

Red Bull Turkey, the Kemer Enduro Club and XVENTURE are proud to once again announce the world's highest prize money paid out in Extreme Enduro:

At both, the Beach Race and Forest Race, the following money will be paid out:

1. €1,000 2. €750 3. €500

At the main event, the Olympos Mountain Race a total of €15,500 will be paid out to the top 10 riders as follows:

1. €6,000 2. €4,000 3. €2,000 4. €800 5. €700 6. €600 7. €500 8. €400 9. €300 10. €200

That makes for a total prize money of €20,000 which will be paid out to the riders at Red Bull Sea to Sky 2015!

Red Bull Sea to Sky App & Live Time Keeping

For the first time ever, the Red Bull Sea to Sky app for both, Android and iOS devices is offered. It contains maps of the three races, start list and results and it's a great source of information for both, riders and fans. The app is ready for download and installation in the Apple App Store and the Google Play Store.

During the Forest Race and Mountain Race there will be a live time keeping on our website. With the start of each of those races you will be able to follow the race very closely. The riders are scanned at each checkpoint and the respective times will be transmitted to the website. It’s like being at the race! We’ll announce the link to the live time keeping on Friday, October 2, 2015.

Pre-Race 'Train with the Pros'

Once again the registered riders of Red Bull Sea to Sky were offered to train with some of the world’s best Hard Enduro riders such as Graham Jarvis, Paul Bolton and Ben Hemingway at the "Train with Pros" - a special part in the Red Bull Sea to Sky pre-race program.

Besides those giants there were seasoned and experienced riders such as Lars Enöckl, Peter Weiss and Seppo Suttner who passed on their knowledge and know how to the 100+ amateurs. A unique chance for those who wanted to generally improve their riding and especially suited for racing here in Turkey.
