HOLCOMBE EARNS DOUBLE ENDURO 3 VICTORY IN PORTUGAL

Winning the Enduro 3 class on both days of the second round of the 2016 Enduro World Championship, while also taking a career first overall win on day two, has ensured Steve Holcombe will long remember the GP of Portugal for all the right reason. Following his impressive result at the opening round of the series in Morocco, in Gouveia Steve extended his lead in the Enduro 3 championship standings to 13 points as well as moving to third in the overall EnduroGP championship.

Despite a number of crashes the opening day’s competition was a good one for Holcombe. Confident of a good result he topped the opening enduro test in the Enduro 3 class despite taking a spill. Feeling good on all of the event’s tests he quickly found his rhythm, going on to win five of the day’s six tests. On the final extreme test he placed fourth following a number of mistakes. In the overall EnduroGP class Steve was in the running for a possible win going into the final extreme test. Ending the day third overall he earned his first EnduroGP podium result of the season.

Day two saw Steve deliver his best ever world championship performance. Fast from the off he took to the lead of both the Enduro 3 and overall EnduroGP results where he stayed throughout the day. Winning six of the opening seven tests in Enduro 3 he eventually topped the day by 58 seconds. In addition Steve managed to stay ahead of Finn Eero Remes to win the overall EnduroGP results by close to seven seconds.

Steve’s next outing in the Enduro World Championship will be at the GP of Greece on May 20-22.

Steve Holcombe: “Although the conditions have been a lot more like what I’m comfortable with, it’s still been a tough GP. I still can't quite believe I’ve got my first overall win though. I was a lot more confident coming into this event after making a good start to the championship in Morocco But the first day started with a crash on the opening enduro test, which wasn’t great. After that I just rode as smart as I could while pushing as hard as I could. Things went well and I was leading going into the final extreme test of the day. I made a complete mess of that, which was a bit disappointing, but I still ended the day third overall and winner in Enduro 3. The second day went really well – it’s an awesome feeling to have won. I’ve definitely exceeded my expectations as far as results at the first two rounds go. I’m really looking forward to racing in Greece now and then getting stuck into the two Scandinavian rounds of the series.”
