Hancock 'Keels' the deal! 4th round of the South West Championship Sunday the 19th of June saw the 4th round of the South West Championship head to Huntsham, Devon for a 3 hour hare and hound hosted by CORE Off Road Events. At 11am the flag dropped and it was Keelan Hancock aboard the St Blazey Mx Husqvarna who took the holeshot and lead for the opening three laps. Chasing hard was Bristol based Charlie Frost on the Wayne Mounter KTM 300 who eventually took the lead away from Hancock and began to set a good pace, edging away from the pack! Charlie went on to set the fastest lap of the race on lap 5, some 26 seconds faster than the next quickest rider! Towards the closing stages, Keelan seemed to have a burst of speed and caught Frost, re taking the lead and pulling away by about 30 seconds until on the final lap disaster struck for Frost when he ran out of fuel and was seen pushing his bike back towards the finish to still claim 2nd position! Ross Hancock rounded out the top 3 in the premiere class with 10 laps, narrowly missing out on getting onto the 11th lap like his brother, Keelan, and competitor, Charlie, did. In the expert class, Sherco mounted Hayden Maller from Gloucester romped his way to victory, completing 10 laps, over James AKA Bud Benney on the Marsh Mx/Dirt Punk WR250. Gary McCoy brought home the final place on the rostrum. Garry Baker took victory in the Expert Over 35 class, rounding out 9 laps where all his competitors could only manage 8 or less. Scott Medlyn was 2nd and Steven Powell 3rd.
In the clubman class, it was Josh Noon taking the flag in the E1 category and the Lapford Lad also took the overall clubman class victory aboard his brand spanking new KTM 125 EXC! 2nd E1 was young lad Jordan Brigden and 3rd Zennor Medlyn. Clubman E2 saw Joe Leeming take home the win aboard his new (but old) KTM 300xc. (If you get it... You get it... If not, check Facebook!!) 2nd place went to Terry Pooley and 3rd to Phillip Chapple. The E3 division of the Clubman category went to Ben Dyer, followed by Jonathan Noble and Jed Treleaven. Clubman Over 40 went to Chris Williams on 8 laps, just two seconds shy of Josh Noon. A great ride! 2nd went to Jon Hinkley and 3rd to Paul Downing. Last but by no means least, the Sportsman class was topped by Ian Barnett on 7 laps. Clive Hunt was one lap down on Barnett and took 2nd position and 10 minutes further back, also on 6 laps was David Burley in 3rd. All in all a great day of racing and a real 'Hare and Hound' style course with a long lap so the riders don't get dizzy! More than 20 minutes per lap for the majority! Well done to all who competed and Core & The South West Championship hope to see you at their next events. 31 July is a date for the diary... 3 hour Hare and Hound at Ashcombe, another round of the South West Championship hosted by Core!
