ROUND 4 NORTHERN XC CHAMPIONSHIP Report Alistair Griffin Round 2 of the Northern XC Championship returned to the famous Low North Park venue near the seaside town of Scarborough. The course featured all the usual going including rocky climbs, river crossings, an mx track and some fast and flowing trails. The course was similar to last year but featured a few new sections and with conditions being slightly greasier it gave the track a whole new look. After a misty week the sun shone on Saturday afternoon as the campers arrived and the weather was set good for the weekend. At 8.15 am sharp Sunday morning the Youth race was flagged away. Saul Hirst started strong but unfortunately suffered from an injured hand on the mx track, hopefully a speedy recovery. Liam Crowe used the extra power of the 125 to his advantage to take a comfortable win. Richard Moorhouse was 2nd and really enjoyed the technical course. Jack Winn rounded out the top 3. Archie Wakefield 4th and young Toby Flack 5th. The decision was made to run 2 Adult races due to volume of entries and also to give riders a more enjoyable day. Race 2 featured Over 40 B, Sportsman Over 50's and Novice. After the Youth riders had taken the early slime off the course the adults had prime conditions. Andrew Sykes on his Yamaha took the win in the Over 40 B and also won the AM race Overall. 2nd Place was local VET Glynn Clemit and 3rd went to Rob Wilson. Over 50's was Andrew Maben who made his long journey worthwhile he was also 2nd Overall, Gary Morley and Andy Dean took the other 2 podium places. The Sportsman class had the biggest entry of the day with nearly 40 riders. It was event sponsor Paul Daley Smith (PDS) who impressed in this race taking a dominant win in E2 and also the Sportsman Overall. The E1 class went to D3's Benji Sayer and E3 to James Cooke Thomas. Liam Crowe again deserves a mention for completing the Adult race as well as the Youth he came 6th in the Sports E1. After a 1 hour interval to allow the timing crew to input a few late entries it was time for the big boy's race. It was great to attract some real high profile riders to the event as the likes of Graham JARVIS Jonny WALKER, Billy BOLT, Luke FLACK, Jono RICHARDSON and trials ace Michael BROWN lined up on the start line. At 1pm sharp event director Alistair Griffin flagged the first row away, Jonny WALKER on his Factory RED BULL KTM took the holeshot closely followed by BOLT (Eurotek KTM) and JARVIS on the Factory Husqvarna. The first stages of the race made for intense viewing as WALKER and JARVIS swopped places. However as the race wore on it was JARVIS who would take the advantage and eventually took the win with a margin of over 3 minutes from Jonny. Billy BOLT was again impressive and took 3rd. A mention must go to Luke FLACK on the MPS SHERCO for 4th who impressed the crowds with his flamboyant style. 5th Place went to trials ace and local lad Michael Brown on the GAS GAS. The Expert class line up was also strong and it was Grahams spanner man Damo Butler #13 who took a comfortable win, Damo clearly enjoying the unique Low North terrain. Ben Thomson kept the little ET JAMES 125 singing to come away with a great 2nd place. 3rd was James Jackson (Jacko) on the EUROTEK KTM only a minute or so behind Ben. Dan Bewlay was 4th on the CRAIGS YAMAHA and Joseph Westgarth 5th. The Over 40's is always competitive and at Low North it was no different.
It was John Bradford (EUROTEK KTM) who made the best start but as the race
entered the dying stages it was Anthony TEMPEST who appeared smoother and
quicker on his CJT OFF ROAD BETA to take the win by only 40 seconds from
BRADFORD. Alex Owen enjoyed his day setting the fastest lap in the VETS
class, he took 3rd. Thanks to all riders and marshals who made the event possible, Alistair Spowart for the awesome live timing and Paul from Autosmart for the Awards. I think everyone would agree that this was the best AG event yet and we hope to improve every year. A final thanks to SDMC for the use of the excellent land.
