WOR Events made a welcome return to the Cumbrian fells at the Firbank venue near Kendal last weekend. Resuming events there after a break last year, it was nice to see so many bikes come out in support of the 2hr Hare Scramble that was being hosted by the well known race organisers. The event was called the Wildcard Hare Scramble and it was part of the Clubs Wulfsport Winter series.

The track was an old school, open moorland, proper Enduro layout with the distance being set at 5 miles per lap and the riders hoping to get as many laps in as possible in the time duration allowed. Big Bogs, slippery off cambers, trick stony trails , open grasslands and more of the like made up the going that certainly did test the riders for the entire race time on the clock.

Ryan Ireland

Triple D motorsports supported rider, Sam Winterburn, was in simply electric form. The 20 year old from Skipton was simply untouchable on his 2t KTM as he pulled clear on lap 2 never to be seen again by his peers as he marched, smoothly and with some devastating speed in the muddy bits, through to an overall win with a very comfortable 10 minute winning margin, in fact only a tiny way off lapping 2nd and 3rd place in the Experts. An incredible ride and nice to see after having had to come back from some very gnarly wrist surgery that has been holding him back over the last couple of years. Watch this space on this young man. Runner Up after a simply epic battle with the 3rd place rider was local dirtbiker, Ryan Ireland. Ireland battled with WOR regular and 2016 Putoline Hare Scrambles Champ, Ross Davies (Husqvarna) for a while throughout the event and a last lap pass on Davies saw the KTM of Ireland launch over the chequered flag finish area to secure the silver award. A very gracious Davies punched the air with delight as he crossed the line just 1 second down on Ireland, It was almost a draw some would say! The top 3 riders being the only riders to complete 10 laps all race.

Lewis Ellis (40 KTM) was doing his first ever WOR Event and also one of his first Hare Scrambles, He took to it like a duck to water as he simply dominated the Clubman class from start to finish with a 9 lap ride and a 54 second victory from Runner Up, Paul Engerlen and 3rd placed Sion Jones. Engerlen (KTM) and Jones (Husky) are WOR regulars and they always go well in the class, Lewis did brilliantly to fend of their challenges and looks like being a rider to certainly watch out for in the coming races. The top 2 riders finishing on 9 lpas with Jones on 8.

Kyle Deswert on his KTM was certainly the man to catch in the Over 40 A group. This was the fast Vets group and Deswert was fast, eventually topping the group by over 7 minutes from Runner Up, Gavin Elliott. These two rider were the only ones in class to finish with 9 laps. 3rd spot on 8 circuits went to Colin Mcnee whom rode brilliantly considering he had not raced or in fact ridden for nearly 18 months.

Vets B glory went to the local boys with Stephen Thornton topping the class by one minute and 18 seconds from Runner Up, Mark Barrow and Andy Jones in 3rd place. The top two riders completing 8 laps.

In the always competitive Over 50's class it was Andrew Maben that took a 2 minute winning advantage over Runner Up, Neil Crayston. Crayston, the Boss of nearby KTM dealer Triple D was kind enough to donate a brilliant array of prizes for the event and was rewarded with one of his always consistent results on the podium. Third place Over 50 went to another local rider, Tony Gunn whom always supports the WOR when they are up north.

Clemmy Mosser was the top rider in the Sportsman class as he chased down early leader and Welsh WOR regular, Dewi Arwel Davies, to eventually pass him and take a near 3 minute advantage at the top of the group. Paul Thomas also made the trip up from Wales as a WOR regular to take 3rd spot. All 3 riders doing a brilliant 8 laps each.

Top Novice was Chris Mathers on 7 laps as he held off challenges from Mark Carradus and Dean Stewart whom finished in 2nd and 3rd place respectively.

Robert Crayston

The special WOR award of the rider of the day went to Youth class Winner, Robert Crayston. Mounted on a little 85cc KTM, the son of Neil from Triple D was a real head turner as made those little wheels boss the gnarly fell side terrain as he gave a few adults a shock when the buzzing little 2t came passing by. Again this young man will certainly be one to look out for in the future. Runner Up youth was Jacob Wilson.

The event was a cracker and re establishes WOR back at the Firbank venue. The support and atmosphere up there was top notch and the event ran smoothly and safely as you would expect from these seasoned organisers. WOR would like to thank all involved in the running of this meeting with the biggest thanks of all as always going to the riders that supported the event. Well done all riders.
