Rain End

The Chiltern Hills Enduro Club scheduled round 2 of the championship at their home venue of Lane End set in the deep woodland valleys just outside the picturesque town of Marlow. The days leading up to Sunday saw the rains come down. The course holds up well to bad weather as the valleys are predominantly chalk based, however, this in turn makes traction very difficult resulting in an entertaining event.

At 9am sharp, the riders from youth 1&2 took to the line with approximately 20 children in the combined classes. Fresh from his training course with Lee Waters and enduro legend David Knight, John Stanley had the pressure from winning round 1 to contend with. He established an early lead only to have the flying Georgia Potter snatch it from him in time control. Travis Field (also looking strong and confident early on) was in the mix. Doug Lote look poised to strike at any moment until a stall left him struggling to restart his bike. In the end it was Stanley that proved manly to take the class win and overall youth category. Doug Lote came second with a late pass on Georgia Potter who came in a close third. Travis Field won youth 2 with Tyler Davis second and Cameron English in third.

As the clock struck eleven, it was time for the adults. The organisers struggled to hold back 160 riders, all eager to get cracking. Once out on the seven mile loop however, the adults soon realised how tricky conditions were. A fantastic technical course and a credit to the club. The early lead was taken by trials ace Jack Lee who never looked back- his smooth fast pace couldn’t be matched. Second in the expert class was the flying Jordan Wright. He was chased in by Jacob Young.

The clubman class seems to be getting faster with each round. The ballistically quick Norbert Duhonyi won his class and finished fourth overall – beating many of the experts. Second was Alexander Rollings, with a well-deserved third going to Wayne Burns.

Novice honours went to Sam Chapman, Lee Percy and James Carnegie.

The newly formed intermediate class (now in its second running) sees the older youth riders tackle the full seven mile lap and the full duration with an enforced 20 minute pit stop. Previously, Jacob Roper was the lad to beat – could he reproduce the pace from round 1? It seems so! Hammering through the field, he looked set for another adult-bashing victory until…one squeeze of the clutch too many left him stranded on a steep uphill with a long walk back to the pits. Stepping in for the class win was the ever-smiling, stylish Joe Phillips and Archie Gunton came second.

In round 1, Sophie Bailey had a strong second place – not so in round 2 as she pulled off an impressive class win. Second place went to Karen Thirtle.

Sportsmen’s honours went to Brook Alder, Harvey Boswell and Ryan Jones.

Trail bike class was won by Gavin Harle and Inter Q by Joe Bacon.

The quad bike class had grown from round 1 with some serious riders entering. The 850cc 4x4 quads made the muddy climbs look easy. Some sounded more like rally cars tearing through the woods – quite daunting for the solos at times. All seemed to enjoy the testing conditions with smiles all round.

For round 3, all head to the fantastic Houghton Conquest in Bedford – a venue synonymous with motorcycling since the 1950s.
