Another awesome line up of Northern Enduro Hare & Hounds enduro fans packed Driffield in East Yorkshire for the final Showdown to the 2017 RAW Enduro Rock Oil Championship. Many Classes were still to fight for the overall win, and boy was there some real competitive racing on the day.

Jamie Williams held his advantage over Richard Moorhouse in the Youth A Class running into the final round, after Moorhouse broke his wrist two months ago his limited bike time meant it was always going to be hard to beat the in form Jamie Williams. On the day the pair were giving everything they had, separated at the flag by 29 seconds the pair shook hands and reflected on a great season with RAW. Williams takes the RAW Enduro Youth A title for 2017. Bert Crayston now focussed on his adult career had one last ride in the Youth class to take third spot. Cory Cookland rolled up his sleeves and revelled in the slippery morning conditions to take the Youth B class with a comfortable margin from Sam Boyd. Sam always show great composure, his second spot was a great end to the season. Hayden Stansfield continues to Ouse his newfound confidence; his third place at this final round is a massive improvement from the start of the season.

With early morning Drizzle blowing away as forecast, and with a packed start area ready for the Morning adult race, a slightly delayed start saw each class separated by a clear minute as the riders flowed onto the average 14 minute laps around Driffield. Phil Dodsworth ended his Sportsman Vets season and Overall Championship by taking the win. Phil will now head into 2018 as the man to beat in the NEW Sportsman Elite class for 2018. Steve Bryan was very consistent throughout the race to take runner up spot, with Mark Fenwick in third on the number 4 machine. The Sportsman class should have been a straightforward steady points haul for Isaac Archer to seal the Championship. As we all know its not over until fat lady sings in any sport, with his nearest rival Ben Walker having his best ride of the season taking the round 10 win, Archers only Crash saw his RAW Supported KTM clutch damaged beyond repair leaving him to simply limp around trying to savage points. Archer was 4 points shy of taking the championship despite his best efforts. Well done RG Racing rider Ben Walker taking the Sportsman Class win. Ricky Ford ended his season on a high taking a superb 3rd place back home for his efforts. Andrew Dean finished his 17 RAW Season on a high taking the over 50 class race win and Championship. D3 KTM Boss Neil Crayston netted runner up on the day and in the Championship, with local veteran Steve Leaming enjoying his Driffield Blast with a fine third place. After a father son battle mid race Burt Crayston took his D3 150 KTM to the novice class win after an impressive race. Grant Cooper signed off his season with a fantastic runner up place on the day, this also gives him runner up overall in the Novice class. Simon Tate set his sights on the Novice Championship at the start of the season; his dedication and cool head saw him gather the points needed at Driffield taking third place to secure his Championship win.

With the weather conditions getting better by the minute, track conditions were drying out, it was however also getting rough and testing in some ungraded areas. Over to the PM riders who have heaps of experience in finding smooth lines and the scene was set for a race to the flag in the Expert class for the win, and clubman classes for the top places.

A brilliant turn out of top Northern Experts graced RAW round 10. Colin Appleyard’s Zac Sherwin, TM Motorcycles Lee Sampson, MJMX upgraded Lewis Ellis, RAW Enduro rider Danny Culkin, Title leader Phil Hancock, with Liam Radcliffe and Oliver Allbones all ready to spoil the party.

Phil Hancock

Lewis Ellis

Fast Starting Lewis Ellis led the experts around lap one, the pace of all the experts was impressive, a full two and a half hour race meant anyone wanting a result needed slick fuel stops and determination to grind out a good end of season race result. Going into the final Lap Zac Sherwin and Lee Sampson went Bar to Bar for the win, both riders not wanting to let the other off the hook, a perfect lap from Sherwin saw him take the Expert class win on his Appleyard supported FX350, Lee Sampson was the first to shake Sherwin’s hand on a proper “race” after the flag. Lewis Ellis showed his expert pace taking third place after Danny Culkin crashed out of a penultimate lap shoot out with him for third. Danny was dazed and concussed after his fall but showed great Expert pace almost all race.

Phil Hancock takes the Expert Championship by virtue of his consistent season with a fine 4th place point haul. Out of retirement Danny Clarke overcame a shocking start to take a very cool win in the Clubman Vets ahead of championship winner Lee Pallet. Come back to full time racing Danny RAW needs you on the start line. James Cooke Thomas sealed his runner up championship position with a fine third place on the day. Only one Expert vet entered, John Bradford took the points and the championship as we head into a new VET’s PM format for 2018. Tom Weston was the Clubman class winner, RAW Regular Lee Stansfield pushed hard all race to take a fine runner up place, this also netted him runner up place in a very competitive Clubman championship. Tommy Grimmer getting to grips with his new RAW supported TPI bike ran a very strong third after a race long battle with Stansfield and early pace setter Dom Richardson.
