On the 26th September, under very testing times, we saw the first Chicken Run Sprint take place at Saintswell Motocross & Enduro Centre hosted by Saintswell Events ACU.

With all possible measures taken and the Sprint Enduro discipline lending itself to the restrictions it was all ready to go!

At 9:30 am,with the sun shining , the sportsman class led the riders out for the sighting lap. It soon became apparent what was in store with open hill ground, woodlands, grassy Welsh going and a revamped top quality MX circuit to finish the special test!

The flowing Welsh loop had several hard routes and “chicken runs” and therefore some big decisions to be made by the riders. One of them being a twenty foot river jump that would save the riders around five seconds a lap. There was also a very steep hill line that would save around 10 seconds if attempted but as it soon proved thirty seconds to a minute could easily be lost by getting it wrong!
As the day went on the track rode into a fun and challenging course for championship and sportsman alike.

The Championship Class saw Cornish man Josh Gotts take the early lead and never let it go as he won all tests outright setting the fastest lap time overall - 8 minutes 18 seconds.

In second was Tom Elwood after a day long battle with Fraser Flockart in 3rd. Also in the championship class it was great to see past Welsh Two Day champ Edward Jones ; Charlie Evans returning from injury and Extreme Enduro specialist Paul Bolton.

The Expert Class was dominated by Charlie Chater, winning every test despite being pushed by Jack Cadwallader in second and brilliant to see local Rhayader motor club member Adam James battling against a strong field to take third.

Vet Expert 1st place was John Shirt who excels when he visits the Welsh hills and put himself in a good position over all. In second place was northerner Andrew Reeves who was a late entry for the event and in third was Robert Cooke.

Clubman winner and winning a Rabaconder tyre changer was Archie Collier; putting the hammer down early, getting himself a good seed to push on for the day. Second place in Clubman was Thomas White and in third was Llandrindod Wells man John Williams who showed good form on home territory.

Vet Clubman was a different story as the riders battle from the start but by the end of test 8 Luke Powell had a clear win over local man Martin Paosila Jones in second. In third was Bo Anderson putting in a strong ride.

The Under 19 Class is where the future is and one of the brightest lights, Jack Probert, took the win flying from the start. In second place was another local lad Brad Price and third Rhydian Rees who’s had a great season and recently moved to a 125 machine.

There was only had one rider in the Ladies Class - Claudia Stead, who would have taken some beating as she powered around Saintswell in only her third event.

Sportsman was a popular locals class and it was good to see so many of them having a great day including Ben Hardwick, Tom Groves, Mark and Rob Davies and Radu Cosmyn on his first ever event! The Class win was taken by Alwyn Morgan, second place was Corey Davies and in third was Ryan Swain.

Clerk of the course Adam Rees would like to thank everyone who supported him for his first event as a promoter, friends, family and sponsors E T James, Amped, P3 solutions, Endurotyres.com and Rees Agri who helped make it happen.

Let’s hope next year is more straight forward.

Stay safe.
