Enduroland Quad XC
Rd.3 at Chacombe
Report Tim Tighe

The third round of Enduroland's Quad XC series ran on Sunday at the brilliant Chacombe venue, just off Jct11 of the M40. This relatively new series was very well supported and a host of top quad riders turned out to the venue, which was new to most of them.

Enduroland are running a series of quad and bike XC events, six in each category, with points from four events to count towards the overall title. Paul Winrow, Darren Bridge, George Galloway Clint Eagle and Sophie Bosworth were very familiar faces from the quad scene in the 450 class while Simon Lang headed the 4x4 class. A 250 class and 700 class were also included as quads of every shape and size lined up for a fast and furious 90 minutes.Nigel Wheatley laid on a 4-mile course, taking in all the fantastic features Chacombe has to offer, for a race in dry and bright conditions, in complete contrast to Saturday’s torrential downpours. The ground was still hard in most places and suited the quad racers and the landowners. By the end of the race there was little evidence that there had been a quad event at the venue.

Chacombe appears to be quite a small venue on initial impressions. A large field of natural whoops dominates the lower section of the course with a woodland section topping a small rise at one end but Chacombe has plenty of hidden surprises. A large valley is concealed behind the visible treeline and this valley has plenty of very challenging climbs and drops in addition to many fallen trees on the valley floor to act as stoppers for riders who take the easier course options. Towards the end of the lap a huge open field provided the speed element to the lap with a twisty section complete with log barriers running alongside a slower chicken run.

Clint Eagle lead the charge as the 450’s left the line with Winrow waiting until all the classes were on their way before beginning his challenge, even then he still beat Simon Lang who was late in arriving and joined the race several minutes after the start.

Eagle lead for nearly half the race until Winrow and George Calloway passed him but Winrow had cruised for much of the race before the realisation that he only had 90 minutes spurred him into action. The final laps saw Calloway take the lead as Winrow got stuck on one section allowing Eagle to pass for second place until Darren Bridge mounted a late charge and took the runner-up spot behind winner Calloway putting Eagle third, Winrow fourth and Sophie Bosworth fifth. Bosworth had held her position well, despite losing a four-minute gap over Mitch Couzens at one point.

Bailey Edwards and Oscar Hurley were locked in a head to head struggle for supremacy in the 250 class. Both riders completed six laps with Edwards eventually taking top spot, Hurley second and Danni Leggett third.

Simon Lang more than made up for his late start by winning the 4x4 class ahead of Jada Ski and Tom Brennan Callum. Joe Humphries had to settle for second spot in the 700cc class as Chris Leggett powered to victory but not by much as both riders clocked seven laps apiece, on par with the more manoeuvrable 450’s.

The whole weekend at Chacombe was filled with action. The British Sprint Enduro Championship is running there soon and a few riders made the most of the opportunity to get the lie of the land. Lee Edmondson was there ‘testing’ his new bike and has certainly got to grips with his Beta, winning the mini sprint on Saturday but it was Jack Edmondson who was in the money, grabbing £100 for the hole-shot competition on Sunday morning.

Practice was packed from 10.30 onwards but Chacombe devoured the mass of riders and nowhere was too crowded. It is an excellent venue and the BSEC should run really well there. The Quad XC event was really good and highly competitive across all classes and ran like clockwork. Boss Hogg has certainly adapted from practice to competition with ease.
