2014 IRONMAN
Woodberry Lane
8th June
Report Photo Teamsnapper
One event Teamsnapper really look forward to is the annual Ironman and
Team Event hosted by Portsmouth Motorcycle Racing Club, 6 mile loop of
woodland and plenty of obstacles/ hazards like the Log Bridge Crossing (2
trees strewn across a 5ft deep and 15ft wide hole), Purpose built vertical
wall (That proved more difficult than most thought), Wheels of Doom (Set of
car wheels on an axle bar), Dirtbikebitz Tractor tyre obstacle, and many
more logs and tyre hazards, anything that looked a bit daunting they put in
an easy route but you were penalised a lot of time so it was worth having a
go.
Sadly the day before we had an horrendous storm and downpour which made
conditions very difficult and testing for first hour or two and then
conditions were near on perfect and with the sun shining it turned out to be
as usual a great success and proceeds going to the Air Ambulance (Hampshire
and Isle of Wight).
We personally had a great time and was fantastic to catch up with old
friends and meet some new ones and already looking forward to 2015.
Overall Ironman and Championship Class Winner
Despite having to start dead last Kyle Jacobs worked hard to come through
the field and take the much coveted Ironman and only solo rider to have
completed 14 laps which made the long trip from Cornwall so much more
worthwhile.
Expert Ironman Class
PMCRC stalwart Mark Jordan won the Expert class with 11 laps although could
be penalised by the fashion police for his pre race attire, Teamsnapper
rider Graham Maunder was supposed to be riding his Yamaha but last minute
probs meant the TM was on duty and she proved it was a good choice with 10
laps although Graham was pushed by Andy Stevenson who also completed 10 laps
on the Yamaha WR, Simon Clark completed 7 laps and only pulled out due to
exhaustion from laughing so much at his best mate Nick Baker who really did
take a mud bath and resembled something from the lost lagoon, Matthew
Hitchcock was riding well but pulled out early and not sure whether physical
or mechanical.
Clubman A Class
13 laps class win and runner up overall for The Big Man Graham Reid who does
not say a lot off the bike and today he did all his talking on the bike and
Graham does excel in the trickier conditions and a much deserved win, 12
laps for Sussex rider James Meston gave him the runners up position and
looked happy all day long, 3rd Nick Palmer who has improved massively from
when i first saw him ride a few years back, 4th Jake Szabo who gave me lots
of entertainment with his animated style, 5th and 6th my good friends
Donovan Pearce and Tim Metcalf who both simply love their bike time and can
be happy with their results on their first visit to Woodberry Lane,
Teamsnapper rider Alex Mace should have stayed in bed and should be ashamed
of his performance with 7th place although he deserves a medal with the
amount of excuses he gave, 8th Elliot Beken whom loves the tricky conditions
and looked happy early on but only posted 7 laps so not quite sure what
happened, Big Bad Bruno had a bad day... enough said.
Over 40 Class
Mudshack Racing’s Nick Selwyn took class victory and 5th overall and can
be well pleased with a completed 11 lap total, runner up Michael Toussaint
took a while to adjust but once he found a bit more grip he made up some
good ground despite confusing us with his new helmet and kit, 3rd to The
Bookman Matt Hubbard who just keeps going along with his bloody mindedness
he never gives in and thats what gave him a podium today, 4th Lee Szabo who
impresses me every time i see him and surprised he finished so low, The
colourful and immaculately presented Richmond Mace was 5th.
Clubman B Class
Class win, 12 laps and 4th overall sounds like a good day to me so i am sure
youngster Rob Higgs would be elated with the result and rode very well and
not afraid to have a go at the obstacles, Stuart Maunder will probably be
still grinning at getting runners up spot today and very much earned and
managed to keep good friend Sean Lynch behind for 3rd, 4th and regular
Ironman rider Josh Brown who unlike a lot of riders today seemed to be
better on the early laps but once the slime had gone he seemed to drop back
a bit although may have picked up an injury, 5th Andrew Newland, 6th Nick
Summers who did not look happy today out there from start to finish, 7th
Fent Eastlake whom becomes almost remote controlled with his consistent laps
and times and very unanimated....maybe we have an android couple in Fent and
Charlotte, 8th Nick “The Tumble” Rumble always does his best and never
fails not to crash yet still has that stupid grin across his face, 9th Dan
Moore whom i do shout encouragement to but seems to fall on deaf ears but
never less he always enjoys his Ironman, 10th Andy Silverstone, Chris Reader
started well and was looking at a possible top 5 but only posted 5 laps,
Jason Saint looked lively for 4 laps and pulled off, Darren Giggs had a
nightmare event with bike problems at the start which most of us would have
chucked the bike back in the van and gone home but the ever cheerful Giggsy
persevered and got going but the beast was not happy so only 2 laps posted.
Sportsman Class
I can hear the chants by Biker FM “Deano, Deano, Deano” and rightly so
as Wiltshire’s Dean Robinson took Woodberry lane by the scruff and let her
av it and with class victory, 12 th overall and 10 laps completed he can be
a happy man and from my point of view conditions seem to suit him and was
the best performance i have seen from him, not far behind chasing him hard
was the man with the hair Matthew Lovelock whom definitely got quicker as
conditions dried out, 3rd Darren Clark on the big Honda, 4th James Hosegood
who seemed pretty consistent all day, 5th Peter Mainhardt who like many
others picked up his game in the latter laps, 6th with 8 completed laps
Adrian Pearce, Liam “DogMan” Hastings 7th but rode a lot better than
finishing position dictates, Michael Warner and Roy Austin also completed 8
laps, Mark Stanley 6 laps, Brett Hohls 5 laps and Jake Purkis 2 laps
completed, Barry John had an early bath as did Graeme Searle, Steve
Dougherty.
Championship Team
1st Si Beken and Manny Bernardez (Team Balls to the Walls) were early
leaders and looked likely for the overall but tired a bit in the final
stages but equalled 14 laps by winners, 2nd Jason Bowen and Tom Vandy (Team
TC Energy) both rode well and Jason’s little 150 could be heard screaming
for its life in the woods of Woodberry and a finish of 12 laps and the award
of having the lairiest kit ;-) 3rd Team Smiffy Brothers Aaron and Connor
whom both rode like they stole it and so good to see Connor riding so well
on a bike he needs a ladder just to get on and can be happy with his
performance, as for Aaron we all know how damn quick he is and he looks
hungry again as well as losing weight... yet still manages to somehow not
win, although his get off mid air at about 15 foot scored a 10 from each
judge, Team Chichester Honda retired early after Darren Osborne had an off
that resulted in a broken collar bone, (A Teamsnapper get well from us
Darren)
Expert Team
A great partnership of Jack Hooper and Royal Marine Commando Joey D (V Gooch
Team) topped the class and overall Team Event with both of them doing equal
duties and along with their army of supporters it was a popular victory and
14 laps in the bag as well, runners up were teenagers Josh Kirby and Niles
Reid (Team Berg) whom both rode well and put in lots of effort and also
completed 14 laps and pushed Team V Gooch all the way, 3rd Team Psycho (Tim
Newman and Tom Moore) both rode well especially Tom on the early laps and it’s
great to have Team Psycho back as a unit despite the pairings mental
problems, 4th Team Grovers which was a father and son team Dave and Ryan
whom both have not ridden regularly or competitively for a while showed some
great skills and endurance despite both not being bike fit, 4th Team Two Old
Two Slow consisted of PMCRC stalwart and Mr Nice Guy John Brown who has not
ridden for well over a year due to other things in his life taking priority
and former PMCRC class champion Simon Coventry and both had huge smiles all
day and i for one enjoyed watching them and having them back in the sport.
Clubman A Team
Ello Ello Ello what’s going on here then...... Class winners were Dorset
Police A Team of Craig Redmond and Neil Deakin who completed 12 laps and
were one of the most consistent teams out there and both Craig and Neil
seemed to ignore my yells of encouragement which related to me that they
were both trying so hard, Runners up were Team M and S Racing which
consisted of Martin Biles and Sara Carter with 9 laps completed.
Over 40 Team
Croydon MCC riders Richard Morgan and Chris O’Grady Team Morgan Tools took
top honours with 12 laps, Runners up Tony “No Neck” Nother and Son Cole
were Team Like Father Like Son who notched up 11 laps between them and very
much a family concern today with plenty of friends and relatives supporting
and No Neck Tony will be content he beat good friend Gareth Allen along with
Ross Muncer Team Gaross who came in behind in 3rd, 4th Team The Two K’s of
Karl Dyderski and Keith Roberts with 10 laps completed, 5th and 9 laps Babey
Racing old Boys of Lee Whitcombe and Tony Cobb.
Clubman B Team
Winners, 13 laps and 4th overall to Team SP Active (David Valler and
Christian Fairclough) who seemed to do nothing wrong and both equally looked
happy in the conditions and much deserved win, Runners up Team Tortoise and
The Hare (Lee Blackburn and Daniel Dicker) were my favourites to win this
class and put up a good fight but could not quite match the consistency of
winners, 3rd Babey Racing 1 (Shaun Tutt and Steve Holdsworth) who did very
little wrong and both equally entertained me with their so very similar
styles, Team Wasted (Ade Wilkins and Neil Marshall) were 4th with 11 laps,
5th Team Not So Young Guns of Lance Hindley and Mike Stevens also on 11
laps, 6th Pete Firth and Kev Wells (Team Jumped Up Sportsman) whom i thought
rode a lot better than position reads, 7th Team No Hope Racing (Father and
Son Wayne and Shay Barnett) who’s pre race tactics somehow never
materialised and despite the pair of them arguing and bickering i am quite
confident in saying they had a great time, 8th Team Red and White Huskys
(Ian Ballard and Paul Chalwin) Ian will never be the quickest out there but
he never gives up and always the gent on the course and he can be proud of
Team mate Paul who was one of the only clubman A and lower to attempt the
log crossing of which i applauded and cheered.
Sportsman Team
Another Father and Son team Nutty Nashers (Pete and Rob Nash) took class win
with a respectable 10 laps, runners up were Dorset Police B Team (Mark
Barter and Matt Stacey) who were not far behind with 9 laps completed.
