Autumn arrived in Mid Wales for the Rhayader club’s Simon Rees Hare n Hounds with a sharp frost but turned into to perfect conditions around the 4 mile course at Cwmythig Hill. An excellent entry including a dozen sidecars took to the course with the experts off first with Adam James lead from the start to finish to end up a lap ahead of Aaron Martin with Llewellyn Pavey third, while it was much closer in the clubman class with Chris Davies battling with Phil Jenkins throughout the event with Chris just crossing the line seconds ahead of Phil to take a well earned win with Alastair Bedford finishing third on the same lap just a few minutes behind.. Once again the Over 40 class was extremely competitive with Chris Morris making a comeback after several years out of the sport mixing it with the top veterans, Chris was down in fourth at the mid point but upped the pace to Jason Rees by 9 seconds at flag for the win while Martin P Jones finished just a second ahead of Ryan Leary for third, all four were less than a minute apart at the end. In the mature Over 50s class Colin Griffiths got the better of Malcolm Davies for top honours. In the big sportsman class Robert Marsh finished a lap ahead of Rowan Rees and Martin Williams while James Griffiths came through the field after getting stuck on the first lap to take the Simon Rees trophy for the best local sportsman and 7th place overall. Naomi Rees took the honours in the Ladies class finishing with 15 laps to her credit.
The sidecars enjoyed their outing with current British Champion David Williams and Simon Brown getting the better of Jonathan Williams and Neil James in the experts class both finishing on 18 laps, in a big clubman class recently crowned British Clubman champions Gareth Rowlands with Will Green held off arch rivals Robert Mills and Anthony Mills to win a brand new trophy given in memory of club member Trevor Evans. Trevor’s son Nicolas was out competing with Alun Evans as passenger and worked himself up into second place before a derailed chain dropped him back to third. - www.rdmcc.co.uk
For their third Wednesday evening event of the year the Rhayader Motorcycle Club tried something different by running a Motoduro, two fortyfive minute legs run over a three plus mile course including the moto cross course and surrounding fields. With the sun shinning the experts took off at a tremendous pace with Adam James and Lee Edmondson leading with Shaun Buchan charging hard in third place, Buchan soon took the lead from Edmondson with James in third and despite his best efforts Lee couldn’t get the better of Buchan with both just beating the clock to do an extra lap while James missed the extra lap by a few seconds. In the second leg Edmondson was determined to get the better of Buchan and etched out a slender lead with James again holding third and these three took the flag in that order however when the times were added together Shaun took the overall honours by just sixteen seconds from Lee. Young Moto Cross rider Ben Anderson obviously enjoyed his first event at Rhayader taking two wins in the clubman class ahead of Marcus Morgan in the first leg and Chris Davies in the second, while Ben’s father Bo took the overall honours in the Over 40 after finishing second to Andy Watkins in the first outing Bo took control of the second leg after Watkins pulled out. Richard Holland took an easy victory from Steve Hillman on his vintage CZ in the outing encounter of the Over 50’s class but the CZ man got his own back in the second leg to push Holland into second by a mere six seconds. In the Sportsman class the lads had to give their best to Adelaide Watkins who eased to two victories ahead of James Griffiths in leg one and Gareth Abbott in the second leg Results Overall Photos Keith Bowen
On a bright warm night competitors faced a two mile course tidied with obstacles such as rocks, logs and tyres for the Rhayader club’s evening extreme Hare n Hounds. Top enduro rider Jamie Lewis set the pace in the first leg using the event as a warm up to the European championship round next week, hot on his heels were local riders Adam James and Marc Evans who swapped places with James starting the last lap with a slight lead on Evans but an error on the rocks saw Marc seize the opportunity to claim second. In the second leg Lewis again showed his class to work out a comfortable lead but this time Adam was in determined mood and rode hard to hold second spot to the finish with Marc coming in third.
The sportsman had fun attacking the hazards with very few taking the chicken runs put in to avoid the worst of the hazards, in the first leg Harrison Weale got the better of Martin Williams and Adam Keil while in the second leg Ben Morris got his act together to take first place ahead of Adam Keil with Weale third and Williams in fourth.
