Holcombe wins @ Largin
Round 3 of the South West Enduro Championship
Report Mike Roose

The Camel Vale Motorcycle Club ran round 3 of the South West Enduro Championship sponsored by Thor Motorcycles at Largin Woods near Liskeard in Cornwall on Sunday 13th April with an entry of 122. It's a mixture of Broad leaf and Spruce combined with open trails, picturesque views, slack times and added to that a cracking special test set out by Tony Dinham which meant everyone was sure to be in for a good day out in the glorious sunshine after months of rain.

There has been plenty of battles before on the site what with an Iron Age Hill Fort situated within the Wood and earth mounds believed to be from the English Civil War and the battle of Braddock Down in 1643 and the quality field of 16 riders in the Championship Class were going to have one more. They faced 9 laps and 6 special test and fresh from his overall win in the E1 Juniors at the recent European round in Spain Crescent KTM UK mounted Steve Holcombe was flying and finished first 35.3 secs in front of Nick Life on his Gibbs/St Blazey mx Husaberg. In third on his Thor motorcycles Beta was Max Hembroke followed by Keelan Hancock on a St Blazey mx Husqvarna a mere 1.2 secs in front of his brother Ross.

The Experts with a total of 8 laps and 5 special test saw young Jack Penhaligon take a clear win from Richard Holmes, with Tony Penhaligon 3rd, Cameron Young 4th and Julian Oakes 5th.

Expert over 35 Class had the same number of laps and special test but times were a little slacker. Scott Medlyn finished first 10.4 secs in front of Ross Youlton, followed by Trevor Vercoe , Cliff Darke and Chris Doidge.

All the Clubman classes had 7 laps with 5 special test, Tristan Young was first in E1 from Robert Jago with Nathan Watts 3rd and James Benney 4th. E2 saw the closest battle with Liam Skelton edging out John Parker by 6.8secs with Rob Richards 3rd and Shaun Philp 4th. Matt Ellis won the E3 from James Bright and Sam Gilbert.

In the Over 40 Clubman things were competitive as ever with Richard Philp finishing 13.1 secs in front of Mark Budge, Chris Williams 3rd, Andy Annear 4th and celebrating his 60th birthday in style with a fine 5th was Arthur Johnson.

The Sportsman completed 5 laps with 3 test, Zennor Medlyn 1st, Mark Wade 2nd and Jake Greenaway 3rd.

Camel Vale Motorcycle Club staged round 1 of the 2014 South West Enduro Championships sponsored by Thor Motorcycles on Sunday 19th January at Grogley Woods near Bodmin in Mid Cornwall. The tight and rooty 8.5 mile course was always going to prove tricky for the 123 riders after weeks of rain but thankfully most of the day remained dry overhead.

With a Championship class consisting of 18 riders it was always going to be hotly consisted as they faced 5 special test and 9 laps, only four managed to stay clean on time and Nick Life (St Blazey mx 300 Husaberg) ran out the winner from Max Hembroke (300 KTM) with Steve Holcombe (250 exc Ktm) dropping a minute but still finished in third.
